Wednesday Word; Hold Thumbs

South African English has a flavor all of its own. I have picked up quiet a few different words since living here. Thought a fun way to share a glimpse into cross cultural life would be to pass on a few South African words/phrases. So I’ll occasionally do Wednesday word. Hope you enjoy!

Hold Thumbs:  which is similar to the phrase “cross your fingers” in the States

Example, “Hold thumbs for the Springboks to play well this weekend.”

hey there – would this be equivilant to thumbs up here in the states? or is is specific to just the Sprinboks playing well? I’m thinking I should use your wednesday word during our missions moment in children’s church so keep them coming…

"You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation." Rev. 5:9
I'm a missionary in South Africa. I have been here for four years and plan on many more to come. God has captured my heart with this nation. Just like with anything there are some days overflowing with joy and other days filled with heartache. But I love it and wouldn’t trade living and working in South Africa for anything. I am living a dream; it is more than I could think or imagine.
